10 Easy Steps for the Perfect At-Home Manicure

10 Steps to a Perfect DIY Manicure

A salon manicure can be both pricey and time-consuming. So, whether you’re trying to save some extra cash or skip the trip to the salon, there are plenty of reasons to love an at-home manicure. Whatever your go-to look — from a classic French manicure to this season’s boldest colour — follow our 10 easy steps for the perfect, salon-quality manicure at home.

1. Moisturize

Keeping your nails hydrated is a great way to make sure every manicure lasts. We recommend applying cuticle oil every night, especially before a manicure, to allow the oil to fully moisturize your nails and the surrounding skin.

2. Get Nude

Make sure you remove all traces of previously applied nail polish, especially if it’s a dark colour. There’s nothing worse than spotting some leftover polish once you’ve applied your new shade.

3. Ditch the Excess

Once your nails are clean, brush a gentle cuticle remover around the edges of your nails. Leave it for 30 seconds before gently pushing excess cuticle back with a cuticle tool. Don’t push too far and do not clip, tear, or rip into the cuticle. If necessary, just nip off the free edge with cuticle clippers.

4. Prep for Polish

Apply a small amount of nail polish remover to your nail surface using a cotton pad to clear away any trace of oil. Any moisture or oily residue will prevent your polish from adhering properly.

5. All About That Base

Don’t skip the base coat! Applying a base coat creates an even surface for your polish, helps protect against dark colours staining your nails, and most importantly, extends the life of your manicure. A good quality base coat can help prevent chips for up to a week. And who wouldn’t want that?

6. Roll, Don’t Shake

When prepping your bottle, skip the shaking and roll it instead. Shaking can cause air bubbles to form — bubbles in the bottle often lead to bubbles on the nail, which will inevitably cause chipping.

7. Layer Up

Apply your nail polish colour in thin layers, allowing enough drying time between applications. Two coats usually do the trick. Remember: chipping begins at the tip of your nail, so be sure to paint that edge carefully.

8. The Cherry on Top

To prevent your at-home mani from chipping, don’t forget your top coat. Top coats create a protective barrier that prevents fading and chipping while adding long-lasting shine. A plumping top coat can even deliver a gel-look finish — no UV lamp required.

9. Maintenance Is Key

To keep your manicure looking fresh, apply a single layer of top coat every couple of days. Daily touch-ups are even better.

10. Moisturize Again (and Again)

Apply a good quality cuticle oil every night to keep your manicure and cuticles looking their best.

These simple steps work for both manicures and pedicures, so get painting! With more time at home these days, it’s the perfect opportunity to start perfecting your DIY nail game.
